The Backstory Again for New Visitors!

I wanted to revive this old post for those who may be reading this blog for the first time. This is about the Hoskins family up to the point when Allie was first diagnosed. Since then she has been through a full round of chemo, remission, and the cancer came back for round two. She has been to the Mayo Clinic for a Stem Cell Transplant and more chemo. Please read through the update posts below and keep an eye on this site for more updates to come as Jeff & Allie continue to kick Cancer's butt!

Jeff Hoskins and Allison (Martin) met in 1995 while attending Goddard High School. I remember the day Allie approached Jeff’s sister Joy and said, ‘Your brother is so cute’. From that day on, Allie only had eyes for Jeff and we girls schemed with her to convince then, shy guy, Jeff to take her out on a date. Jeff planned an amazing evening for Allison on their first date (you remember that first big High School date!) and they have been together ever since. They were married right after high school and now, 12 years later they have an amazing family. Preston, Parker and Bailey are beautiful children with all of Jeff and Allison’s wonderful qualities – they are kind, considerate, creative, outgoing and so resilient! In the summer of 2006, Jeff was diagnosed with Leukemia and underwent Chemotherapy for several months. He entered remission in January of 2007 and is still rebuilding his health. Allison was diagnosed in June of 2007 with stage four Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and is currently undergoing chemotherapy.Jeff and Allison retain their resilient, positive outlook on life and are an inspiration to all they encounter! They need our thoughts, prayers and support to make it through this difficult time and that’s why we created this website!

The Latest Scoop...

Hi All!

Sorry it's been a while since the last update. But as they say, no news is good news! Allie is still recovering and getting stronger every day. She will go for PET & CAT scans on August 5th. On the 11th, they should have results and will know whether the treatment is working as it is supposed to. Either way, they'll go back to Mayo in September.

Keep praying and loving this family. They're doing great but not quite out of the woods just yet.

I'm thinking if the news is good (like I know it will be!) in August...we need to have a celebration before their next trip to Mayo. Who's up for Margaritas??

They're Home!!

Allison and Jeff are back home in Wichita now. Allie says she still has some recovering to do but they're very glad to be doing it at home with all of the family back together again!

I also want to say a BIG thank you to everyone who attended the Ladies' Day event. And to Nick, Tracy and everyone else who helped organize it. Also to INK Construction and Ben Christensen at Smith-Barney. Both companies have hosted fundraising events recently. Now that they are home, Jeff and Allie are faced with the task of dealing with all of the medical bills on top of day-to-day expenses and all of this will be a big help to their family!

And thanks to everyone who has been praying for the family, calling, or leaving encouraging words here on the site. All of that is a huge blessing and comfort as well!

Hopefully more good news to come as they both continue down the road to recovery. Hopefully once and for all!!

A message from Allie!

Hello everyone I just wanted to write and tell you that everything is going fine. My counts are coming up like they are supposed to and I am feeling pretty good but it is still day to day. We will hopefully be coming home the end of this week yeah!!! I can't wait to be back home. I still have some recovering to do but at least I will be in Kansas. One sad note though I was wondering if everyone could say a prayer for my oncologist he lost his little girl to pneumonia a couple of weeks ago and is needing some prayers. I love and miss you all, see you soon.

PS- I just wanted to add...this is why we love Allie so much! With everything she is going through, she's asking for prayers for someone else. Please say a prayer for this doctor and his family.

A visit from the kiddos!

Jeff's sister, Joy, has been staying with the kids at Jeff and Allie's house for the past couple weeks. This past weekend she packed them all up and took them to MN for a visit with mom and dad. They had a great time and were all VERY happy to be together for a few days!

Better News!!

Just wanted to let everyone know that I have spoken to Allison and Jeff everyday this week and they are doing much better than last week!!!! Allison has been up once or twice a day to take walks down the hall and check email (I know she would love to hear from you!). She is recovering from her intestinal infection and her counts are coming up! She is looking forward to seeing her children, who will be visiting the Mayo Clinic this weekend. Kris (Rzeszotarski) Perry drove down from Hudson, WI last weekend to visit Allison and Jeff and I believe this helped them both a great deal!! Jeff said Allison talked more that day than she had in two weeks! Things are looking good - THANK YOU everyone for your support!

News from the family...

I got this email from Jeff's sister, Joy. Sounds like we need to keep praying hard for both Jeff & Allie!

Hi Jennifer,

I have been in Kansas now for two weeks and absolutely loving every minute with these kids!

I have attached two pics of Allison, which I think you should post on the website, if possible. She is going through her toughest period, and I think people need to be aware. She had the transplant on Friday. She felt pretty good during the weekend, but as expected, she has entered the battleground and is now suffering severe bone pain and nausea. Jeff is at her side, but I worry he is drained. He is still taking chemo pills every week and they cause him to have migraines for a couple of days. Allison's doctors are considering putting Allison on feeding tubes due to the amount of weight she has lost, but have held off due to the risk of infection. Today, her white count was 0 and her platelets were 18,000 (normal is 150 to 300 thousand). If her platelets drops to 12,000, she is expected to receive blood transfusions. This is normal for stem cell transplant patients. She is very weak and very, very sick. When I speak to Jeff on the phone, I can hear her crying and moaning in the background. They need all the support they can get.

More from Allie

PART ONE:
Hello all, I was just writing to let you know how things are going. Things have not been that good this week. I went into the hopital on Monday with alot of pain, chills, fever, and upset stomach, they thought it might be my stem cell shots but it wasn't instead I had some kind of bacterial intestinal infection called C-dif. They also found out that my stem cell shots aren't working and so now we have to meet with the doct. on friday for plan B. I am trying my hardest to stay positive but it is getting really hard, I need a little brake I am so sick of being really sick. I got out of the hospital today but I still only feel about 50 %, I will let you know how things go this will obviously make are trip a little longer than expected. I love and miss you all please keep praying for me, I need it.

PART TWO:
Things are going to be put back about a week because of me going into the hospital and because of the growth factor shots not working. We are going to try a new drug and we start everything the 17th and buy the 21st we will be collecting, and they will collect until they get five million stem cells. I am trying so hard to keep my spirits up but sometimes I just cry. I miss everyone so much and I miss life being normal so much it kills me.

A message from Allie!

Hello all I was just writing to let you know about my doct. appt. today. I saw the doct. and he said everything looks good, that all my tests came back fine the only thing he is a little concerned about is that instead of one kidney stone I have two one on both sides. So he wants a kidney doct. to take a look at me before we start, nothing big just a precaution. I will start my shots to make the stem cells tomorrow and will do those until Monday is the plan, I also get my other line put in Monday morning and they will take my port o cath out. I am ready to do this I feel good and can't wait to be cancer free! Sorry if I haven't answered phone calls lately we don't have alot of minutes left this mth. I've been checking e-mail daily so if you have any questions or just want to talk just e-mail me I love getting them.

Day Two

Allie said today was a little easier and tomorrow shouldn't be too bad either. She's in good spirits and is very grateful for all her wonderful friends and family.

Keep it up everyone...one day at a time!

Ladies' Day!

Day One

Allie and Jeff arrived in Minnesota and Monday was filled with appointments for lots of tests. They tested her Renal functions and also did the bone marrow biopsy. Allie said they put her to sleep for the biopsy but since they took samples from both hips, she's a little sore today. The next few days will be filled with more appointments and tests but Allison wants everyone to know she's doing well. I'll keep you posted as I hear more.

Thank you again to everyone who is following their journey, praying and helping out. With so many of us behind them, I know they'll get through this and be back home soon with all of us who love them!

Since then she has been through a full round of chemo, remission, and now the cancer is back for round two. We've beat it before, we're ready to do it again!

Jeff Hoskins and Allison (Martin) met in 1995 while attending Goddard High School. I remember the day Allie approached Jeff’s sister Joy and said, ‘Your brother is so cute’. New!

The donation button to the right now allows you to enter your donation amount. Just click the button and fill in the amount you'd like to help out with!

Thanks everyone! The goal is to raise enough to allow Jeff to be off work while Allie is undergoing treatment so that he can be by her side at the Mayo Clinic. We can do this!

WOW!!

The response from people already has been overwhelming! I've gotten messages from people scattered all over the country already this morning. I know everyone wants to help. We'll be meeting this weekend to try and formulate a plan and of course all the details will be posted here soon after. In the meantime, you can donate by clicking on the link to the right or contact me at hope4thehoskins@gmail.com if you would like to mail a check, gas card, gift card etc.

I do want to point out that I and several of Jeff and Allie's friends have no shame and are willingly and eagerly asking for your help. This is NOT coming from the Hoskins family and although they would never solicit donations, they are gratefully and graciously accepting the help we can give them. With 3 kids at home and a possible 3 month stay out of state for treatment...they need our love and support both emotionally and financially right now.

Also- feel free to leave comments for them on this site too. I know they check it regularly and would love to see everyone's words of encouragement!

Latest News

Allison and Jeff are at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota as I type this. If you haven't kept up with the Hoskins family in the last few weeks Allie has had some bad news and her cancer is back. Here's the latest:

They are waiting on approval for treatment from their insurance company. If that all goes through the plan is for her to be treated at the Mayo clinic in about 3-4 weeks when they have their next available opening. In the meantime she will come home later this week and undergo a 2-3 day inpatient chemo treatment. Then, a break until it's time to go back to Minnesota. Once there she'll go through about a week's worth of testing including a bone marrow biopsy.

The plan of attack for the cancer is very aggressive. First, they'll collect stem cells from her body. They will give her a monster dose of chemo to wipe everything out of her system. A week later the stem cells will be put back into her system in hopes that it will be able to rebuild itself. Then it's about a 5-6 week wait as her body heals and they will monitor her blood levels, cell counts and all of that. (I know there are medical terms for all of this and someone else I'm sure could explain it much better than my lousy attempt! My medical expertise is limited to reruns of ER.)

So...dear friends and loved ones, what's next you ask?? We need to HELP them get through this. Money for travel expenses, gas cards, restaurant gift cards, anything along those lines would be great. The wheels are turning for another fundraising attempt. ANY thoughts, ideas or suggestions would be very welcome. Also, any corporate or private donations. Please contact me with any questions at hope4thehoskins@gmail.com and I'll keep you all updated as we learn more about Allie's treatment and our efforts to help her family get through it as easily as possible!

It's Back

Allison found out Monday 3/17/08 that her cancer is back and has spread to the areas around her kidneys. This time the doctors say that chemo and/or radiation won't be enough and she is looking at a possible bone marrow transplant. She has an appointment next Monday to determine the next step in her treatment.

I will be updating this site once again with news as we receive it and soon we will formulate a plan to help the Hoskins get through this latest round of cancer in their family. We've kicked it's butt twice...we'll do it again!
